As the sun rises over a crater, its rim casts a long shadow across the floor. If the rim were of even height and the floor were perfectly flat, the shadow would be a smooth curve. This is what most small simple craters look like (the BIO types).

Lunar names have caused a vast amount of confusion every since the second Moon map was made by Hevelius, who didn't accept the nomenclature devised by the first mapper and namer, Van Langren. By 1935 the International Astronomical Union had agreed on a set of nomenclature that has been the basis for everything since.
A Lumpy Mare

NASA selected the maria as landing sites for early Apollo missions because everyone knows maria are smooth. But this low sun image by Jim Phillips shows that at least this part of Mare Tranquillitatis is peppered with dome-like hills and swells and linear ridges. But you ain't seen nothing!

North of Mare Imbrium, towards the lunar north pole, is a region considerably different than the southern pole. Instead of towering mountains and deep craters, the topography of the region poleward of 60 degrees N latitude is battered and muted with only an occasional younger crater to attract attention. What happened?

The lunar south polar region almost always presents a craggy wilderness of rims and peaks, all squeezed together by foreshortening and exaggerated by grazing lighting. Its a delightful place to observe and maybe someday to visit.
