Straight Wall
11.01.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
The Straight Wall is the most conspicuous fault scarp on the Moon. Discovered by Huygens in the 1670s, the fault appears as an 120 km long nearly straight line of shadow for a few days after first quarter (lunar day 9).
Photo of the Century
10.01.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
Thirty-eight years ago, near the beginning of the Space Age, Lunar Orbiter II snapped this low oblique photo of the inside of Copernicus crater, and the press labeled it the Photo of the Century.
Posidonius: Rilles and Uplift
9.01.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
Posidonius is a beacon of interest along the otherwise bland north-eastern shore of Serenitatis. The large (95 km wide, 2.3 km max depth crater may have originally looked like Copernicus with broad terraced walls and a scattering of peaks centered on a deep, flat floor. But thats not how it looks now!
The Right Stuff in Lunar Science
8.01.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
In 1949 the University of Chicago published a small book that established the modern understanding of the Moon. The Face of the Moon was written by Ralph Baldwin, a PhD astronomer who worked full time in the family furniture-making business.
Petavius: Rilles & Volcanic Spots

One of the most skillful lunar imagers is Hong Kong amateur KC Pau. His picture of Petavius (Sept 11, 2003, 10" newtonian and Phillips Toucam) reveals details that I have never seen on any Earth-based photo, nor on the best Lunar Orbiter image!
Gores of the Moon
6.01.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
No, this isn't where old presidential candidates retire. This colorful, flowerlike image shows lunar gores - flat map pieces that can be cut out and pasted on a sphere to make a Moon globe. The colors depict topography, based on laser altimetry measures from the Clementine spacecraft.
South Polar Wilderness

Most observers point their telescopes at the mare regions of the Moon - and part of the reason is that it is far easier to find things there! The further you get from the maria, the more the Moon appears as a wilderness of crater piled upon crater.

Colorful Aristarchus Plateau
3.01.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
Do you ever see color when looking at the Moon? Few observers do, but sometimes, some parts of the surface seem to take on a delicate hue. I once observed a decidedly greenish-mustard coloration for the Aristarchus Plateau.

Some of the most dramatic images ever obtained of a planetary landscape are the oblique views taken by Apollo astronauts using handheld Hasselblad cameras. This great view was taken by the Apollo 8 astronauts, who made the first flight around Moon in December 1968.
