Question: What can an amateur astronomer with a webcam and 10" telescope on the balcony do that NASA hasn't done yet? Answer: Take high resolution images along the terminator to reveal domes and low elevation features. That is exactly what K.C. Pau does.

Lunie Lunie

The Moon has long inspired poets (and lovers) and apparently can creep into the soul of even hardened lunar cartographers. Ralph Aeschliman, previously a cartographer and planetary airbrush artist at the US Geologic Survey...

Surveyor 1 landed in Oceanus Procellarum on 2 June 1966, near the crater Flamsteed. A 100 km wide 'ghost' crater, Flamsteed P, surrounds the landing site, consisting of a ring of hills which are probably just the peaks of an old crater rim, mostly flooded by mare basalts.

Magic on the Mare Magic on the Mare

What a wondrous piece of the Moon! As the Apollo 15 Command Module circled the Moon its Metric Camera took 2240 images of the lunar surface. The very best, like this one near the boundary of Mare Imbrium and Oceanus Procellarum, are works of arts and inspirations for science.

Transient TLP Transient TLP

Transient Lunar Phenomena (TLP) were the 20th century equivalent of the 19th century quest for change on the Moon. From Galileo to Herschel to Schroeter to the 1835 Moon Hoax to Pickering and his lunar insects, people wanted to believe that the Moon was inhabited.

A Long Graben A Long Graben

Graben is a German word meaning ditch or trough. Geologically, graben form by the dropping downward of a linear block between two parallel faults. Terrestrial graben typically occur in regions of extension - where forces pull the surface apart in directions perpendicular to the resulting graben.

Mare Insularum is a name that was given 1976 to a relatively poorly defined region south of the Carpathian Mountains ring of the Imbrium basin. Its an area of mare and small hills (thus the Sea of Isles) that are ejecta from the Imbrium impact.

Gassendi steals the limelight when the Moon is 11 days old, but there are other less prominent features nearby that tell interesting stories. To the northeast of Gassendi at the southern end of Oceanus Procellarum is a very delicate rille with an important connection to Mare Humorum.

Lunar eclipses offer little in the way of new scientific information, but we are often surprised by their color, and also in the beauty of the way they are photographed. This pleasing photograph of the November 8, 2003 eclipse by Bob Horton has excellent resolution and great color.

Boring (?) Boring (?)
2.07.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya

Most images published by LPOD are dramatic views of craters, volcanoes or lunar mountains, but this one is of a pretty bland section of Mare Insularum near the crater Gambart. Is LPOD really so desperate for lunar images? No, but we do need more good ones ASAP!
