A Rille Draped Across the Landscape
4.10.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
Judging by things I have recently read on the Web, there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about lunar rilles. Different web sites state that the Sirsalis Rille - imaged here...
8” Marvel

LPOD features many images that are exquisitely detailed. And most of them are taken with precision mounted 8"-10" APO refractors or 12"-24" inch Schmidt-Cassegrains, commonly with specialty mirrors. These telescopes often cost more than a new car!
Stereo Moon

In the early 1900s, stereoviewers very popular parlor entertainments. A handheld stereoscope allowed you to see two images, taken from slightly different angles, and fuse them in your brain to see stereo. Judging by the frequency that stereo images of the full Moon show up on eBay, the Moon was a popular object.
Julius Franz and Mare Orientale

Orientale - the mare and the basin - has a long history of independent discovery and community forgetfulness. Schroeter reported his discovery of the Rook and Cordillera mountains in the early 1800s. In 1874, the American geologist Shaler observed these mountains and correctly concluded that they were the rim of a large crater on the far side.

Unknown Luna 19
28.09.2004 | Lunnoe foto dnya
On September 28, 1971, Luna 19 blasted off and nearly disappeared from history. The mission was successful, after a fashion, but coming after the stunning successes of Apollo 11, 12, 14 & 15, and having only lackluster results, no one seemed to notice this little lunar orbiter.
Petavius Naked!

When I see images like this I am convinced that Bruno Daversin drives a lunar orbiting spacecraft rather than just a 24" telescope at the Ludiver Planetarium in northern France. Bruno uses...

Most features on the surface of the Moon are examples of familiar types: impact craters, collapse pits, crater rays, sinuous rilles, tectonic rilles, volcanic domes, etc. But there are a few features that are very unusual and the Gardner Megadome is one.
Trough & Pancake

Here is another wonderful image of the Cauchy fault, rilles, domes and crater, to complement the previous low sun view of the western end of this interesting area. This very high resolution image is remarkable for being relatively high sun and yet showing beautifully the low relief domes.
