Osnovnoi cel'yu proekta DIRECT bylo izmerenie pryamymi metodami rasstoyaniya do nashih "blizhaishih sosedei" - galaktik M31 (tumannosti Andromedy) i M33. Izmereniya osnovyvalis' na nablyudeniyah razdelennyh zatmennyh dvoinyh i na cefeidah. Proekt byl nachat v 1996 godu. Za eto vremya po programme proekta bylo provedeno bolee 200 nochei nablyudenii na malyh (1.2-1.3 metrovyh) teleskopah. Dopolnitel'no byl proveden ryad nablyudenii v IK-diapazone na 8.1 metrovom teleskope Gemini. Proekt eshe dalek ot zaversheniya - v stat'e obsuzhdayutsya tol'ko promezhutochnye rezul'taty.
