Vsledstvie sil'nogo poglosheniya v atmosfernyh gazah (v osnovnom v kislorode i parah vody) millimetrovye i submillimetrovye nablyudeniya s poverhnosti Zemli vozmozhny tol'ko v ogranichennyh chastotnyh intervalah, tak nazyvaemyh "oknah prozrachnosti" atmosfery. V svyazi s etim instrumenty etogo diapazona razmeshayutsya po vozmozhnosti vysoko v gorah ili na bortu samoletov i kosmicheskih apparatov. V nastoyashee vremya v mire uspeshno funkcioniruet dovol'no mnogo millimetrovyh, a takzhe neskol'ko submillimetrovyh observatorii (KOSMA, CSO, JCMT, HHT, SEST). Naibolee krupnaya antenna millimetrovogo diapazona v predelah
SNG - RT-22 KrAO (ris. 3). Ona postroena v
60-h gg. proshlogo veka, tochnost' poverhnosti mm, chto
pozvolyaet rabotat' na volnah do
mm. Antenna aktivno
ispol'zovalas' dlya nablyudenii kak v kontinuume, tak i v
spektral'nyh liniyah molekul.
Naibolee ambicioznyi nazemnyi proekt v dannoi oblasti - eto
Bol'shaya Antennaya Reshetka v Atakame. Ona stroitsya na vysokogornom
plato (vysota 5000 m) v pustyne Atakama (Chili). Reshetka sostoit iz
64 12-metrovyh antenn s tochnost'yu poverhnosti 20 mkm. Naibol'shaya
baza 12 km i razreshenie ms dugi. Polnaya ploshad' 7238
m
. Chuvstvitel'nost' i uglovoe razreshenie budut ravnyat'sya ili
prevoshodit' dostignutye v optike i IK-diapazonah. Nauchnye celi
vklyuchayut v sebya issledovaniya mel'chaishih struktur i naibolee
dalekih ob'ektov.
V to zhe vremya imeetsya neskol'ko kosmicheskih proektov na raznyh stadiyah realizacii (ODIN, Hershel, SOFIA, Submillimetron i dr.). Ih bol'shim preimushestvom yavlyaetsya otsutstvie atmosfernyh ogranichenii, chto obespechivaet nepreryvnoe pokrytie vsego diapazona chastot. Tak, naprimer, Hershel Space Observatory, zapusk kotoroi namechen na 2007g., budet osnashena 3.5-metrovym teleskopom i vysokochuvstvitel'nymi priemnikami, pokryvayushimi diapazon 60-670 mkm. Odnako razmery kosmicheskih instrumentov vse zhe znachitel'no skromnee, chem u nazemnyh teleskopov, tak chto oni ne mogut dostich' takoi zhe chuvstvitel'nosti (po tochechnym istochnikam) i uglovogo razresheniya. Takim obrazom, kosmicheskie i nazemnye instrumenty dopolnyayut drug druga. Pervye bol'she podhodyat dlya obzorov (kak po prostranstvu, tak i po chastote) i issledovanii protyazhennogo izlucheniya, a vtorye - dlya detal'nogo issledovaniya kompaktnyh ob'ektov. A nailuchshee uglovoe razreshenie mozhet byt' dostignuto ob'edineniem teh i drugih v nazemno-kosmicheskii interferometr.
