What books do you really need to study and understand the Moon? Here is a minimalist collection, divisible into two parts. First, for observers, you need to know where you are on the Moon, and how to understand what you see. Rukl's Atlas of the Moon is unrivaled - it's an easy choice.

It is amazing how many interesting areas of the Moon are nearly completely overlooked until someone captures a great image that says, "Hey, there is something interesting here!" This is that image for some older rilles tucked away in an embayment along the eastern shore of Mare Serenitatis.

Apollos 15 through 17 carried Panoramic Cameras which acquired thousands of photographs with resolutions up to 2 m. Some of these pictures show tiny details not seen elsewhere. Here is an example from the "Apollo Over the Moon: A View from Orbit" book.

Wouldn't it be odd if Earth's oceans had names but our land masses didn't? Pacific, Atlantic and Indian, but no Asia, North America or Africa. That is the way it is on the Moon. All the seas and various undeserving puddles (e.g. Lacus Spei) are named, but the cratered regions are anonymous.

During the nine months that LPOD has existed there has been a continuing evolution in the quality of lunar imaging. In January and February I was amazed that images were being acquired with 8 to 14" telescopes that were better than the world's previous best, often taken with the Catalina 61" telescope!

In 1822 the Bavarian observer Franz von Paula Gruithuisen astonished himself and later the world with his discovery of a regular herringbone pattern of ridges arranged with geometric precision. Gruithuisen immediately interpreted this small landscape (which he called Wallwerk) near Sinus Aestuum as a lunar city.

By mid-1968 the Soviets were clearly behind in the race to the Moon. The USA had achieved great technical and scientific successes with Surveyor and Lunar Orbiter precursor probes, while the Soviets had not progressed beyond the Luna 9 and 13 landings.
