Ten Day Old Moon Ten Day Old Moon
31.05.2004 | Лунное фото дня

I am constantly impressed that CCD and webcam technology is making serious astro-imagers of us all. Here is a quite nice mosaic of two images that form a publication quality view of the 10 day old Moon. This is the way the Moon looks in the eyepiece.

A Weird Moon A Weird Moon

Perhaps the Moon, in racing to circle the Earth in just 27 days, has torqued itself into a new shape. Or maybe the scanning platforms of the GOES weather satellites cause the elliptical and tilted shape.

This image shows a sliver of a moon (less than 48 hours after new Moon) over Lyman Hill, Skagit County, Washington State. There is no scientific value to this view, but the Moon plays a huge role, I speculate, in providing a sense of beauty to the night sky everywhere, even in sky-bright cities.

Whence the Bessel Ray? Whence the Bessel Ray?
28.05.2004 | Лунное фото дня

"The crowns of rays spread out over the face of the full moon, and seem to mock at all explanation." I like this quote from the early 20th century German observer, Phillip Fauth because there is still some truth to it.

The Jura and a Missing Rim The Jura and a Missing Rim

The Jura Mts are part of the rim of the Sinus Iridum impact crater. There is probably a fault along the Imbrium side of the crater that down-dropped the missing rim, and then later Imbrium lavas covered it.

Most rilles fall into one of three categories: sinuous, linear or arcuate. But the rilles near Triesnecker don't. As this high resolution view by Tom Leech demonstrates they are mostly narrow and straightish with some tight curves.

A Grand New Lunar Atlas A Grand New Lunar Atlas

This is a great time for students of the Moon! Since I reviewed five new lunar books in the May, 2001 issue of Sky & Telescope a number of additional new lunar publications have appeared. And the good news continues with the publication of Le Grand Atlas de la Lune by Thierry Legault and Serge Brunier.

Every view of the Moon is different. Often, near the glare of full Moon, astro-imagers stay indoors, re-reading old S&Ts. But as Rod Mollise's nice mosaic of the 12 day old Moon demonstrates there is lots of detail waiting to be captured.

Moon Hides Venus Moon Hides Venus

An occultation occurs when one body moves in front of another.  During it’s monthly cycle, the Moon may move in front of certain stars and planets.  Although our mind&rsquo...

Lunar 100 Lunar 100

Have you heard of the Lunar 100? It is a Messier List for the Moon. A year or so ago I wondered why amateurs didn't pay more attention to the Moon, which is the largest* (angular measurement), most conspicuous and most visually complex object in the night sky.
